Motivation - Your starter pack

Motivation - Your starter pack

Everyone talks about getting motivated, staying motivated, being motivated but it is a lot harder than telling that voice inside ourselves to just get up and "do it".

What is "it" anyway? Is it waking up at 4 am and running for 10ks? Or getting on a low carb diet and only eating salad and chicken because that's what you read on a diet website? Or is it joining a gym and signing up for all the classes, regardless of whether they interest you or not?

For some, that may work, but you cannot sustain long term motivation if your heart isn't in it and you're not being motivated the right way. A lot of it is to do with just getting it "done" but to turn this into a habit, you need persistence, consistency and the want to achieve.

Below are a few things to get you started and you can use one or all of these to help with your fitness journey.

Write down your goals

It's true when they say that you must love and put yourself first in order to be a better person. The most important thing to remember when trying to motivate yourself is your goals. Why do you want to take this journey? What is important to you? Why do you want to change? Write down your goals as well as the reasons behind them.

Goals don't necessarily mean "lose five kilos" or "don't eat chocolate for a week". I'm talking about real goals that you visualise and things that resonate with you as a person. Instead of "lose five kilos" how about "fit into my favourite dress again by the end of three months". Instead of "don't drink soft drink for a week" write "drink more water and substitute soft drink for soda water and slices of fruit".

For fitness goals, instead of "I will be able to do 50 pushups by the end of the month" perhaps try "I will build up my pushups by ten each week".

These goals have to be something that you relate to, that you can see yourself doing and that you are big and scary enough but build up to your final goal. Write down three goals a month and write down a fun thing that you will do for yourself when you reach these goals.

Tag in a friend

Get a friend to help you with your goals by being your "accountability buddy". This person may choose to diet or exercise with you as well but their role is to keep you accountable to the goals you have set for yourself.

Let them know what your goals are and when you want to achieve them by. Ask if they can check in with you at the end of each week to see how you're tracking and to lend an ear if you're feeling challenged or demotivated.

If they are going to align their goals with yours, maybe think about doing something together when you both reach your goals, like taking a mini-break, buying a new outfit or going to a day spa.

Start your morning right

Start your morning the right way. Our recent article talks about what productive people do in the morning to kickstart their day.

A few other things you can do in the morning include setting your alarm earlier so you wake earlier and have a jump on the day, having a light and healthy breakfast, calling a friend and seeing how they are, reading a book, getting ready to your favourite song or album and having switching up caffeine first thing for a bottle of water.

Starting your day the right way sets up your mood, energy levels and drive for the rest of the week.
